Introduction
Why This Book Exists
Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is a life-altering event—for the person who sustains the injury, and for the people who love and care for them. In an instant, life can shift from ordinary routines to hospital rooms, medical terms you’ve never heard before, and uncertainty about the future.
This book exists because knowledge is power. The more you understand about TBI—what it is, how it affects the brain and body, how recovery works—the better prepared you’ll be to navigate this difficult journey. Whether you’re a survivor, a parent, a spouse, a sibling, a friend, or a caregiver, I want you to know: you are not alone.
There is hope. Healing takes time, patience, and support—but many people with TBI go on to build meaningful, fulfilling lives.
My Personal Story (Optional Preface)
You can include a paragraph or two here if you’d like to share your son’s story. Here’s an example draft you could personalize:
In [month, year], my world changed forever when my son [name, optional] suffered a traumatic brain injury. It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. Overnight, I was plunged into a world of medical jargon, fear, and endless questions: Would he wake up? Would he be the same person? How could I help him?
Through this experience, I learned how complex and misunderstood TBI can be. I discovered resources, strategies, and communities that gave me hope. I also saw how much misinformation—and how many gaps—exist around brain injuries.
That’s why I decided to write this book. I want to share everything I’ve learned, along with the medical facts, practical tips, and emotional support that might help others facing this journey.

A Few Words of Encouragement
If you’re reading this book because your loved one—or you yourself—has sustained a brain injury, I want you to take a deep breath. You don’t have to absorb everything at once. It’s okay to feel scared, angry, confused, or exhausted.
Recovery from TBI is often a marathon, not a sprint. There may be setbacks, but there will also be progress. Celebrate the small victories. Find moments of peace and joy where you can. And reach out for help when you need it.
You are stronger than you know. And you are not alone.
Let’s begin.
